President - Medical Faculty Students' Union

Overview

Elected President of the Medical Faculty Students' Union (MFSU) in 2018 through a fair, democratic election, representing the student body on academic, welfare, and disciplinary matters. The MFSU is established under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 (Parliament of Sri Lanka) and operates under the University of Colombo Student Union By-Law No. 1 of 1989. My term fell in a difficult transition period, coming right after a long stretch of student activism to protect free education and the standards of medical training, as students shifted focus back to academics once that fight was largely won - while we kept pushing to safeguard those same student rights and protections, for every student regardless of ethnicity, religion, or other bias. I also conceived and led new initiatives during my term, including 'Virtuous Healer', aimed at nurturing empathy, compassion, and care among medical students so that they carry those qualities into practice as humane doctors.
